Three-Eyed Tuatara Reptile | New Zealand
Tuataras are a rare reptile only found in New Zealand. Even though they look like a lizard they belong to an order of lizard-like reptiles that are otherwise extinct and lived around the time of the dinosaurs! The name tuatara is derived from the Māori language and means "peaks on the back". But their most curious body part is a “third eye” on the top of the head. The “eye” has a retina, lens, and nerve endings, yet it is not used for seeing.
